Total War: Three Kingdoms – Mandate of Heaven is the second addition to the strategy game Total War: Three Kingdoms, released in May 2019. The expansion introduces a new fictional campaign, the action of which takes place in 182 AD – during the so-called Yellow Turban rebellion. A player can take part in a historical conflict by taking either side. We also receive a number of new gameplay mechanics. The authors of the basic version and other parts of the series, i.e. the well-known Creative Assembly studio, are responsible for creating this production. The publisher is the Japanese company Sega.

In 182, China is in chaos. Corruption in the imperial court led to a massive famine. An increasing number of subjects begins to come to the conclusion that the monarch has lost the so-called Heaven’s mandate, or God’s right to rule. People take up arms and are headed by three Taoist brothers in yellow turbans – Zhang Jue, Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao. Who will rule when the emperor is defeated?

Total War: Three Kingdoms – Mandate of Heaven introduces several new factions, which we lead in the new campaign and which have unique mechanics. We are talking here, among others about Emperor Ling, at whose court there is a struggle for power between several factions (bureaucrats, dynasts and warlords) or the leaders of the Yellow Turbans who use the unique resources of enthusiasm and fervor (the first of them “feeds” the rebellion, while the second reflects support in society). Each side of the conflict also has unique victory conditions and development trees.

Additionally, the campaign features a number of new mechanics, such as non-region recruitment (armies can recruit when they are in territory that is not controlled by an opponent, even if it does not belong to them) and historical factions controlled by AI sometimes they start showing up in the game.

Mandate of Heaven also includes forty new units, among which we can find, among others elite regiments – Chen Peacekeepers (cavalry), Traitor Destroyers (shock cavalry), Yaoguai Hunters (archers with poisoned arrows) or Road Fanatics (universal infantry that uses two-handed polearms).
